small
she was squashed up
as small as a baby bird,
damp and secret
and reluctant in its egg,
as small as the breathless
tip of a fern frond,
as the tight, cool centre
of a treble clef,
as the innocent
huddle of a little toe,
as small as a cherry stone
tucked beneath a tongue
I think all that smallness
was just because
she needed
to be held
small things
are easier
to hold
and when
you are holding
something small
it is easier
to say
donât worry
everything
will
be
OK
and anyway
Iâve got you
here
right
now
